17 Terrific Packing Tips When Preparing to Move

Moving can be a thrilling adventure or a nightmare. Below are 17 tips from the pros at U. Santini, to make your moving day a very positive experience. A good move starts with great packing, so let’s get started!

  1. Get a notebook where you will list every box and its contents. This will enable you to find what you need at a moment’s notice. Every box should have a number and that number written in your notebook. If you have contracted with a full service moving company, give them a copy of the lists and keep one in your possession.
  2. Leave clothing on hangers and use wardrobe boxes for these items or simply snip a hole in the end of a large trash bag and slide the hangers through it. Tie or band them together and close the open end of the bag. When unpacking, place the hangers on the closet rod and remove the bag. Most packing services
    sell wardrobe boxes which have a rod at the top to hang clothing.
  3. Use clothing to protect breakables. They have to be moved anyway so put them to good use. Slide small items into socks, wrap glasses in sweatshirts, etc.
  4. Use medium sized boxes. Large boxes can get heavy so leave those for bulky but lightweight items such as bedspreads, comforters and pillows.
  5. Stack lampshades and other fragile, bendable items inside one another to increase strength and prevent creases. Wrap them with paper or towels to keep dust from settling and causing stains. Consult full service moving companies for tips and hints also. They are happy to share their experience with you.
  6. Leave clothing in dresser drawers, making sure they are full. Wrap each drawer with clear plastic wrap to prevent clothing from falling out. Place flat objects in the middle for optimum efficiency.
  7. Nestle bowls, pot and pans in boxes to best use the space. Pad with dish towels, pot holders and other kitchen textiles.
  8. Pack one room at a time. All bathroom items will then be together when you arrive at the new place. The shower curtain, towels, bath mats, etc. should be kept together.
  9. Silver should always be wrapped in an appropriate material to prevent it from tarnishing. This one small step can save hours of work later.
  10. Pack family photographs, scrapbooks, diplomas and the like separately from other items. Place them upright in the boxes and label them carefully. If possible, transport them yourself when moving day arrives.
  11. Rugs should be rolled up and tied. Flat, folded rugs are too awkward and heavy to easily move.
  12. Remove batteries from appliances, clocks, toys, etc. before packing these items. Batteries can corrode or even explode causing irreparable damage.
  13. Nonperishable food should be sealed with tape before going into boxes. This will prevent spillage and also keeps insects out.
  14. Electronics should be carefully packed in the original cartons if possible. Contact local retailers and ask for packing materials and appropriate sized boxes if necessary. They often have them left over from store displays. Business moving companies might have these in storage for sell or even give them to you free.
  15. Collect boxes that are mostly the same size. This will create a consistency and allow for easy stacking and handling. Then pack them full but not to overflowing.
  16. Label, label, label! This cannot be stressed to strongly. It is important to know what is in each box. Refer to your notebook when labeling boxes.
  17. Keep medications on hand until the last minute. Do not pack them ahead. Pulled muscles and headaches are common when moving. You are going to need these.

PACKING

Proper packing is essential to a successful move.  Packing is an extremely important aspect of relocation and if you leave packing to the last minute you’re almost certain to regret it. There are plenty of boxes and containers specifically designed for packing all sorts of items from dishes to sports equipment. It’s wise to consider using these specially designed boxes or utilizing the help of a moving professional to do the packing for you. If you choose to pack it all up yourself though, be sure to wrap everything carefully and tightly and place lighter items on top of the heavier ones. It’s an invaluable idea to mark the outside of all boxes with a short list of their inner contents or the name of the room that is their final destination while doing your own packing.

Below are a few suggestions if you decide to do the packing yourself, however please know that we will still be there to advise you and answer your questions:

  • Get more strong packing boxes than you think you will need.
  • Reinforce the bottom of each box with at least one strip of packing tape.
  • Pack boxes firmly to prevent the contents from shifting during your move.
  • Use clean, white crumpled up paper for padding.
  • Separate all items with paper to prevent scratches.
  • Place heavier items in the bottom of the box and lighter items on top.
  • Use towels, linens, curtains, etc. to pad boxes of fragile items.
  • Remove lids from ceramics and wrap each separately.
  • Seal open bottles with tape before packing to avoid spills.
  • Use an extra large box for lampshades and cushion them well.
  • Remove bulbs before packing lamps.
  • Put hardware from disassembled furniture together in plastic bag.
  • Leave clothes in dresser drawers and hang clothes in wardrobe boxes.
  • Wrap very small items in bright colored tissue so they won’t get lost.
  • Place pictures in boxes between sheets and blankets for added protection.
  • Plates and record albums should be packed on end vertically – not stacked.
  • Remove bulbs before packing lamps.
  • Make a master list of all household items and personal belongings.
  • Number boxes when they are packed and sealed.
  • Label each box and its room destination.
  • Write the contents of numbered boxes on your master list.
  • Pack room-by-room, keeping similar items together.

When moving and packing take these simple precautions to protect your appliances from damage during your move.

  • Clean and dry washing machine. Disconnect and drain hoses.
  • Unplug clothes dryer and clean the lint screen.
  • Remove grease from the stove top/range/oven.
  • Dry out refrigerator and freezer, especially those with an icemaker.
  • Remove any glass trays from appliances. Pack them separately.
  • Clean small appliances, fill empty space with paper and wrap separately.

12 Things To Do In Your New Home

Moving to a new home is stressful even when it is a well thought out and positive choice. There is much to plan and arrange, deadlines to meet and other people involved. We often find ourselves standing in empty rooms thinking, “What now?”

The first tip is for the moving process itself; to ensure that the move is easy and stress-free, so when you get to your lovely new home you can focus on the next twelve tips below.

  3. Gather the family and put together an Emergency Action Plan. Walk through your new home and decide on escape routes in the event of fire, where to go when tornado, earthquake, or other natural disaster hits. Be specific and plan for weather that is common for your region.
  4. Create a first aid and emergency kit. Include phone numbers for your new neighborhood police and fire departments as well as 911.
  5. Locate off switches and circuit breakers. Show everyone in the household how to use them.
  6. Check for smoke detectors and verify the batteries are charged. Test the detector. Do not go to bed without working smoke detectors in your new home. This will ensure your and your family’s safety.
  7. Contact creditors, magazines and other involved parties. Give them your new address to avoid delays.

How to pack your luggage when moving to a new house

Moving into a new house can be a stressful and time-consuming endeavor, so it is best to have an organized system to ensure the process runs smoothly. By packing well, you will not need worry about anything when the full service moving company you hired arrives with their movers & packers to pack and pick up your belongings; you will simply take your luggage and walk out smiling. The following are steps you can take to make your moving experience as stress-free and organized as possible.

  1. The first step is to make checklist for moving with everything that needs to be done – then you check off items as you complete the tasks.
  2. Gather all the items that you want to take in the luggage with you in one room, ideally on top of a bed or table, so you can look at, and work with, everything without bending your back. This can include important documents, clothes for two days – both for work and for staying at home, toiletries, medicine, and objects of personal value.
  3. Bring your checklist and moving and packing supplies, including newspaper, packing tape, bubble wrap, and scissors to the designated packing room. If you don’t have bubble wrap, you can buy it at stores that sell office supplies or from moving and packing companies.
  4. Start by wrapping any delicate object of personal value. Use bubble wrap or newspaper and clearly label the items to make it easier for you to know what it is.
  5. Fold all of your clothes neatly; tee-shirts can be rolled up to save space.
  6. Now it’s time to put it all in the luggage. Start with tee-shirts and towels, as they create a nice cushion.Place your toiletries and personal items, protecting any object that can be easily broken with additional layers of clothes.
  7. Cover the above-mentioned objects with heavier clothes.
  8. Leave work clothes and what you plan to wear the following for last, so you can easily get them without having to fully unpack.
  9. Insert important documents in the inner pocket of the luggage.

Planning Your Move

Planning your Move

Planning your move might be the most crucial aspect of moving.  Planning your move can also be the most stressful!  But if planned well, with the help of your moving company, the stress will be kept to a minimum.

Once you have identified the companies that you want to quote you, evaluate the estimates and selected your mover, you will then have the challenging task of planning your move.  Most reputable moving companies will supply you either on paper or online with a timeline list of the things you need to do week by week up to your moving day. They will also provide you with a Move Plan document confirming the details of the move itself including Where From, Where To, When and How.

Plan ahead. Divide your property into items the mover will handle, items you will handle and items you will leave behind.  There may also be items that are best to store either long term or just for the period between when you move out of your old home and the time when you move into your new home!

The ideal move involves relocating all of your belongings from your old place to your new home in one day. But in reality, our clients often need to store some or all of their possessions for a few days or even months. U. The moving timeline necessarily will be lengthy because it must cover many things.  Below is an abbreviated example of the moving timeline:

 Six to eight weeks before moving day

Working with a mover:

Conduct you research in collecting the names of movers you would like to consider (See my discussions regarding “Choosing a Mover”).

Call those movers and arrange for the agents to visually survey your home and prepare an estimate.

If your company is paying for your move, refer to their moving policy to determine the services the mover will be authorized to perform.

Determine if you want to do any of the packing — or will you have it done by the moving company’s experienced packers?  I am certain your agent would be happy to discuss packing services with you.

Show the agent everything that is going to be moved. Any items you fail to disclose or that are added later to the shipment will increase the cost, even if you have been given a binding estimate.

Read the “Your Rights and Responsibilities Manual” (all reputable full-service moves have one) to make certain that you fully understand the extent of the carrier’s liability.

Sign the Estimate/Order for Service after you are sure you have a clear understanding of each section. If you have any questions, ask your agent to explain.

 Four to six weeks before moving day

Places to notify:

Notify the post office that you are moving from.  An online Change of Address form is available on the United States Postal Service Web site.

Prepare a list of friends, relatives, business firms and others who should be notified of your move. The following list will be helpful:

Electric, Pharmacy, Gas, Dry Cleaner, Water, Lawn Service, Telephone, Bank/Finance Companies, Sewer District, Credit Card Companies, Trash, Laundry Service, Cable/Satellite, Auto Finance Company, Fuel  (Oil/Propane), Health Club, Sewer District, Doctor(s), Newspapers, Dentist, Magazines, Accountant,  Newsletters, Lawyer,  Professional Journals,  Broker,  Insurance Agency,

Department of Motor Vehicles, Social Security Administration, State/Federal Tax Bureaus, City/County Tax Assessor, Veterans Administration

Miscellaneous:

Have a “garage sale” or use an online auction service to dispose of unwanted items.

  • Donate unwanted clothing or household goods to charitable organizations. Obtain receipts showing the items’ approximate value for possible tax deductions.
  • Begin to use up supplies of canned goods, frozen foods and other household items. Buy only what will be used before moving.

 Two to three weeks before moving day

Working with the mover:

Notify your agent if you add or subtract items from your planned move or if there are any changes in dates. Be sure to supply your agent with destination address and phone umbers where you can be reached.

Confirm any extra stops required to pick up or deliver goods to a location other than the main pickup or delivery points.

If your car is being moved, be prepared to drive it to a suitable loading site. Also be prepared to pick up your car at a suitable destination location.

Preparing the family:

Take the family for a farewell visit to some of the places that hold happy memories.
Have a going-away party for the children and their friends.
Have some fun for yourself…an open house or an informal dinner or barbecue. Keep it simple.

Make family travel plans. Reserve hotel rooms and airline tickets as needed.
If driving, have your car serviced for the trip (check tires, brakes and windshield wipers, fluids, belts, etc.)

Preparing household items:

Federal law requires that you dispose of flammables such as fireworks, cleaning fluids, matches, acids, chemistry sets, aerosol cans, ammunition, and poisons such as weed killer. Drain fuel from your power mower and other machinery. Discard partly used cans of oil, paint, thinner, bleach, or any other substances that may be flammable or combustible or those stored in containers that may leak. Discard propane tanks which are used for barbecue grills.
Set an appointment with a service technician to prepare your major appliances for shipment — or have your agent send someone out who is authorized to perform this service.

Set a date for having utilities disconnected. If possible, plan to keep utilities in service through moving day.

Have rugs and draperies cleaned. Leave both wrapped when they are returned from the cleaners.

Obtain a written appraisal of antique items to verify value. Avoid waxing or oiling wooden antiques (and fine wood furniture)

Deciding When to Move

WHEN TO MOVE

When you should move sometimes can be perplexing when you don’t have a specific must move date and therefore can choose when you actually make your move.

Obviously you may have set dates on which you must move.

However, if you have flexibility for your moving date, there are benefits that you can take advantage of and save money or receive other promotional benefits.

The month or the day of the month when you move can be significant to a mover as to the rates that are charged or savings or promotion.

Be sure to let us know if your moving date is flexible.

The spring and early summer months are the busiest times for movers in the New York metropolitan area so if you can avoid moving during these time periods you will be better off not only to obtain possibly better rates but also for better chances to get the exact date you require.

In addition, the beginning and end of each month are traditionally busier than mid-month, regardless of the season. If you are planning to move during one of the times, plan well in advance so your mover’s schedule will fit yours.
