How to Promote Your Yard Sale Online

Moving is time for a change. It’s out with the old and in with the new. And this goes for your possessions too. As you prepare to pack up all your things, you will surely discover that you don’t really need to bring all of them with you. So why not get rid of them and earn some cash at the same time? Holding a pre-move garage or yard sale is a great way to do this. And if you want it to be a successful one, you should promote your yard sale online!

Getting rid of stuff: the what, the why and the how

Humans have a tendency to get attached to things. We obtain them, we use them, we keep them after we stop using them, we never get rid of them. But as you’re preparing for your move, you will inevitably find that you simply have too much. So moving is also a great time for some serious spring cleaning and decluttering. It might not be easy to part with your things, but in the end, you will be glad you did it.

What to get rid of?

Things like old clothes, toys your children have grown out of, appliances you’ve already upgraded, furniture that’s due for a replacement and any items you and your movers can’t move are all good candidates for a farewell card. A good rule of thumb is to get rid of everything you haven’t used in a year or longer.

Why you should get rid of it?

Fewer things mean fewer boxes and less time to pack up which in turn means saving money. And when the time comes, you will be ready to start fresh and clutter-free in your new place. This is especially important if you are downsizing. And if you end up finding your new decorations a bit too sparse? Get new things for a new place and a new life!

How to get rid of the stuff you don’t need?

There are three main ways to get rid of stuff en masse:

  • holding a yard sale: declutter and earn some cash all at once
  • donating: a great way to get rid of stuff and help someone in need while you’re at it
  • throwing away: some items are simply past their due date – dispose of them

Promoting your yard sale

If you’ve calculated moving costs NYC and found that you’re a bit short, a big yard sale can help tide you over a bit. But if you want your sale to be successful, you will need to get the word out first. You can promote your yard sale online or the old-fashioned way. Just make sure people know about it!

Promote your yard sale online

The world wide web is by far the easiest and most effective way to reach many people at once. We spend a couple of hours of our day using the Internet. In fact, odds are that you found the best Brooklyn movers for your move online too. So why not use that to your advantage?

Social media

Social media is a great way to get in touch with people. Whether you are a fan of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Blogspot or any of the literal thousands of others, you probably already have a social media account that you can use to promote your yard sale online. Even if you personally don’t have a big following, there are ways to get the word out there so log in and get started.

Social media like Facebook is a great way to promote your yard sale online.

Facebook: events, pages, and groups

For all its misgivings, Facebook is probably the best social media website to promote self-organized events due to the way it’s structured and organized to connect like-minded people. You can start by making a post on your timeline. Just don’t forget to include a hashtag like #yardsale or #buysellswap in it and your location for maximum impact!

You can also create an event on Facebook to promote your yard sale online. Set a date, time and place and add some photos to get people interested. Send invites to your friends and family – they can help spread the word.

Facebook also has a variety of pages and groups dedicated precisely to buying, selling and swapping of second-hand items. Join a few (especially the local ones) and make a post about your sale. This will greatly boost your numbers as it invites people who are already interested in your event but would normally not know about it.

Twitter: photos and hashtags

While Twitter is not necessarily ideal for this kind of advertising, using the right hashtags can help promote your yard sale online. If the right people with the right following see and retweet your promotion, you can easily reach thousands of people. Including photos and tagging some of the things you’re selling will add flair to your tweets and up your chances of success on this website.

Clever uses of social media are certainly in at the moment but don’t discount traditional ads. Plenty of people still go through classifieds when looking for something. So it’s always a good idea to put a proper ad out there.

Traditional ads online and in papers are still a good way to promote your events.

Craigslist: free promotion

One of the most popular advertising websites out there today has got to be Craigslist. Organized by both location and category and pretty much entirely free to use, Craigslist is probably your best bet to promote your yard sale online. So make sure to include all pertinent information such as location, date and time. This is how you are most likely to reach the interested people in your neighborhood.

Other popular websites

There are also plenty of other websites where you can advertise your yard sale, such as:

These may not be as popular as Craigslist, but they are more specialized and target a more specific audience. Just make sure to read the terms and conditions carefully: not all of them are free!

Promote your yard sale the old-fashioned way

It’s definitely a good idea to promote your yard sale online, but you may still want to do it the old-fashioned way too. Put up a few signs in your yard and around your street, pin the information on a local community board and place an ad in the local papers. This is a good way to reach even the few who don’t rely on the internet and make sure your yard sale is a huge success!
