Moving day is exciting and exhausting, and after more than 80 years of moving people into their new homes, we know that the first day in your new apartment can be a little bewildering. There you are, surrounded by what seems like hundreds of boxes, and you just want to feel at home. But you’re not even sure where your pajamas are and you haven’t been this tired for a long time.
To help you with this crazy first day in your new apartment, we’ve made you a handy checklist. If you take care of these things the first day, you’ll feel like you’re back on your feet and ready to face your new home and apartment with your game face on.
1. Make sure the appliances are working. Before you unpack your cooler or head out to the grocery store, make sure the refrigerator is running, the garbage disposal turns on, and the dishwasher runs. If anything isn’t working, you can get the building supervisor right to work on it before it gets too late.
2. Do some basic cleaning. Unpacking will go much better if you make sure your apartment is clean before you begin. If kitchen cupboard shelves are dusty, wipe them down before you put any food away. Sweep or vacuum the bedrooms before you set up the beds.
3. Get food. The whole world looks brighter when you’ve had a good meal, so make sure you get one before you’re too worn out. If you can get enough groceries for the next couple of days, you’ll find that you’re much more productive (and happy!). For your first meal, try something ultra-easy like delivered pizza.
4. Get kids and pets settled. If you have children or animals, get them situated as quickly as possible. Make sure your pets have food and water and aren’t underfoot while you work. If you kids are old enough, give them jobs to do like hanging their clothes in their closets or putting books on shelves.
5. Check the smoke detector. Before you go to sleep the first night in your new apartment, make sure your smoke detector is fully operational. If the test button doesn’t work, install new batteries and try again.
6. Identify the emergency exits. While you’re thinking about safety, find out where the nearest emergency exits are from your apartment. You can usually find a diagram near the elevator or staircase in your apartment building. Make sure everyone in your household knows about the emergency exits.
7. Contact the utilities companies. If you need to put the electricity or gas in your name, make sure you call the day you move in so the companies can get accurate readings. You may also need to call about phone, satellite, Internet, and cable.
8. Fill out a change-of-address form. Stop by your post office and fill out a form to get your mail forwarded to your new address. Also, contact magazines, newspapers, and companies you do business with to tell them about your new address.
9. Cover the windows. If you don’t have blinds or curtains on your windows, you may want to get something up before the sun goes down. If you can’t find anything else, you can always hang a bed sheet over a bare window until you can get to the store and buy proper window treatments.
10. Celebrate! Moving is an accomplishment, so do something to celebrate. You won’t be able to unpack everything your first night in your new home, so get the essentials done and then put up your feet. A little ice cream never hurt anyone after a long day of moving.

Moving offices is different than moving households. When you move your personal belongings, you can be fairly flexible because your income doesn’t depend on how quickly you get your boxes unpacked. With your office, however, every day you find yourself in moving limbo is a day that you’re not being optimally productive.
If you’re looking to move your NYC office, you’re going to need the help of professionals with experience, resources, and the proper equipment to get the job done. Commercial relocation requires detailed planning and impeccable communication, and your challenge is to find the NYC office movers who can take care of your office move with courtesy and professionalism.
Office moves are always fun!
Here’s what to look for in office movers for your business:
There are lots of people involved in a commercial move, so communications are extremely important. You’ll have many people within your own business who need to be kept up-to-date on details about your move. Additionally, there will be property managers on both ends of your move, building staff, doormen, transportation authorities, moving truck drivers, packers, and more.
A moving company with systems already in place to handle communications will help your move to go much more smoothly. You’ll avoid frustration when everyone knows what’s going on and feels included and accommodated.
Customized Packing Solutions
Many of the items in your office can be packed in standard moving boxes, either by your employees or by professional packers. These items include standard furniture, manuals, files, and records. But many offices have specialized equipment that will require extra care. If you have sensitive electronic equipment, expensive servers, or unusual tools, you may need customized packing crates.
It’s possible to find outside sources that will create these custom packing solutions for you, but if the company that is handling the rest of your move can also take care of our unusual packing crates, everything will be much simpler.
Short- and Long-Term Storage
It’s not uncommon for companies to need temporary storage during office moves. This can come up when renovations have to be done in the new office space or when the facilities aren’t quite ready when the old lease ends.
Whatever the reason, it’s helpful to work with an office moving company that offers storage as part of their standard services. When you don’t have to work with an outside storage company, scheduling and access are much simpler and easier.
Experience and Customer Service
As you evaluate NYC moving companies to help you with your office move, ask about experience and customer service. As mentioned previously, it’s important to keep the impact of the move on your business to a minimum, and one of the best ways to do that is to hire a moving company that is experienced and treats you and your employees in a respectful, professional manner.
One of the best ways to find out about experience and customer service is to read testimonials and find out about the companies’ BBB ratings. The Better Business Bureau tracks complaints about different aspects of local businesses and then rates the businesses on a scale of A+ to F. Working with an A+ office moving company will be a pleasant experience, and that’s what you should provide for your employees–and for yourself.
Here at U.Santini, we like to put our 80+ years of experience to work for your fellow NYC businesses. We have the contacts and communications systems in place to keep everyone in the loop during your office move, and we have the experience and commitment to high-quality customer service to keep your move low-key and professional. Are you looking for a professional and affordable moving company in NYC? Moving can be an expensive proposition, and if you can find an affordable moving company with years of NYC experience, your will have a much better moving experience.
But how do you go about finding such a moving company?
After all, some moving companies have very little experience and even less insurance, and you don’t want to entrust all of your worldly possessions with an unproven company. In the best case scenario, you’ll hire an affordable company that has decades of New York-specific experience under its belt. Here’s how to find such a company and ensure a successful move:
Find a Moving Company With Experience
Moving a household from one location to another seems like a fairly straightforward, simple task, but in New York City, it’s important to find a moving company with plenty of experience. Moving requires attention to detail, proven logistical systems, and contingency plans, and brand new companies tend to be shaky in these areas.
U.Santini has been serving NYC for more than 80 years, and over the decades we’ve learned many ways to move our clients more efficiently and affordably, and we’ve incorporated new technologies as they come along. This experience, plus the benefit of years of loyalty to existing customers, makes for pleasant, stress-free moving.
Check With the Better Business Bureau
When people have problems with local companies, they report their experiences to the Better Business Bureau. BBB standards for trust are high, so when you find a moving company that is accredited by the BBB, you know you’re in good hands.
We’re proud to have an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau on a scale of A+ to F. This rating is based on the fact that we have no complaints within the last three years. Another factor for our A+ rating is that we’ve been operating for so long.
Get Estimate Quotes
Once you’ve narrowed your list of movers down to those with high ratings from the BBB and those with significant experience, go ahead and gather estimate quotes. Be sure to ask for details about the quote. Ask if there are any hidden fees, and find out exactly what the quote includes.
Here at U.Santini, we offer free moving estimates. We’ve designed our estimates to help you think through your moving plans so you can consider all the resources you may need. You can sign up for an estimate here.
Look For a Full-Service Moving Company
Even if you don’t plan on using all of the services offered by a moving company, it’s a good idea to go with a company that provides many different services. Why? Because moving can be unpredictable, and it’s helpful to have back-up resources.
For example, if your home loan doesn’t close on time, you may need to put your belongings in storage temporarily. If you have decided to work with a moving company that has its own storage facilities, your life will be much easier during the interim between when you move out of your old home and into your new one.
It’s also nice to work with a moving company that offers professional packing services, supplies, and custom services like office and international moving.
Choose the Right Time to Move
You’ll likely get a better price on your move if you choose a moving day that is less busy. These days include mid-week days in the middle of the month or during the winter months. Weekends during the summer, especially at the beginning or end of the month, are extremely busy, and you may have a difficult time scheduling your move during these times. If you can be flexible on your moving dates you can usually get a better price.
When you follow these tips, you can find a professional and affordable mover in NYC. For more information about moving in NYC, or to get a quote for your move, contact us at U.Santini. Ask for Dan at 718-767-6778.
